If you have seen numerous fire trucks from other towns in Reading recently it is because all members of the Reading Fire Department along with several other towns recently completed a sixteen hour intensive training course on aerial ladder operation in several different locations of town. This was done after Captain Phil Boisvert received a Federal grant for the course.
The course was taught by Lieut. Michael Wilbur, a 30 year veteran of the FDNY, currently stationed at Ladder Company 27 in the South Bronx. Lieut. Wilbur is a regular contributor to Firehouse Magazine, Fire Engineering and several other trade journals. He is also on several different committees within the FDNY including the purchasing committee for new apparatus. He is also a lead instructor for Emergency Vehicle Response Inc. based out of Otisville NY, who ran the course.
The course consisted of eight hours of classroom followed by eight hours of hands on aerial training. Included were apparatus safety, driving safety, proper positioning and placement, different rescue techniques, vehicle inspection and proper procedures. Several different ideas were brought up to get the most out of the use of the vehicles.
Departments involved in the training were Reading, Wakefield, Melrose and Wilmington. Matt McSheehy photo
