First Baby at Winchester Hospital

Corina Frimu and her husband Veaceslav cuddle with their newborn baby Leya, the first child born at Winchester Hospital in 2020.

WINCHESTER – With a due date of Dec. 29, Corina Frimu knew there was a good chance her second child could be born on a holiday. Her husband, Veaceslav, had just one request – don’t have the baby on Christmas.

Well, Leya was able to accommodate her father’s ask, plus some, holding off an additional seven days, to become the first baby born at Winchester Hospital in 2020. Leya was born at 2:10 a.m. on Jan. 1, weighing 6 pounds, 11 ounces and measuring 20 ½ inches long.

“Once I was past the due date, I didn’t care when she was born, I was ready,” said Frimu.

In fact, she was ready to try anything to induce labor. Most turn to spicy food, but the new mom of two had another craving – red velvet cake.

“I spent all day on New Year’s Eve cleaning,” Frimu said. “And then when everyone was eating dinner, I just wanted to have red velvet cake. Once I ate it, the contractions started.”

Leya is the second child of the Tewksbury couple; they also had their first daughter – two-year old Olivia – at Winchester Hospital. Olivia has spent the past couple months learning about how to be a good big sister.

“She always see my belly, points to it and says ‘baby sister, baby sister’ over and over again,” Frimu said. “I don’t think she knows what she’s getting in to.”
