To the Editor:
This year marks the 21st anniversary of the nation’s largest one-day food drive to benefit those in need – The Stamp Out Hunger Food Drive conducted by the National Association of Letter Carriers. Last year, this event resulted in 70 million pounds of non-perishable food collected, for a grand total of 1.2 billion pounds over two decades of collections!
On Saturday, May 11, dedicated and compassionate Letter Carriers throughout the country will collect food along their routes and deliver it to local food pantries, food banks and shelters. All food collected in Woburn and Winchester will be delivered to Council of Social Concern’s Food Pantry.
Even though it’s extra work for the Letter Carriers, they are proud and happy to be able to make a difference in the communities they serve. As NALC President Fredric Rolando said, “As men and women who touch every neighborhood in America six days a week, Letter Carriers see far too often first-hand how poverty and hunger affect the customers we serve.”
Through this Food Drive, they are gratified to be able to do something about it. And we can do something about it, too, by supporting their efforts. By leaving non-perishable food items out for our Letter Carriers to pick up, we can be part of the solution to the problem of hunger that plagues so many local families.
Please remember to put out your non-perishable food donation (within date and preferably not in glass jars) on Saturday, May 11, before your mail is delivered. Your Letter Carrier will collect it and deliver it to our Food Pantry. If you would like to make a monetary donation, please make your check payable to “Council of Social Concern Food Pantry” and leave it clearly marked for your Letter Carrier.
Together we can make this the most successful Letter Carriers Food Drive ever!
