WILMINGTON — On Tuesday, May 21, Margaret “Peggy” Kane, a longtime member of the Wilmington School Committee, passed away.

Raised in Nahant, Kane was born on June 3, 1947. After graduating from St. Mary’s High School in Lynn, she went on to receive a bachelor’s in Education from Emmanuel College and a master’s in Education from Salem State University. She then went on to be an English teacher at Medford High School for more than 35 years. She moved to Wilmington after marrying her late husband, Dennis, in 1972 to raise her family.

Kane played an active role in the Wilmington community. Notably, she served on the Wilmington School Committee for 18 years. She was appointed Chairperson of the School Committee in 2007, and she served in this position until 2016. While on the School Committee, key issues she directed attention towards included student access to resources such as textbooks and computers, and district data interpretation. She stepped down from the committee last year due to health issues.

For her work on the School Committee, Kane was awarded a Lifetime Achievement Award by the Massachusetts Association of School Committees (MASC) in the fall of 2018. She was seen as a mentor by other School Committee members, and she continued to provide advice for those looking for guidance even after she stepped down.

Aside from her work on the School Committee, Kane was also an active supporter of the Wilmington Public Library. She served as the President of its Friends of the Library from 2009-2018. She also was a regular volunteer at the library’s Book Store Next Door.

Additionally, she was also involved with the Wilmington Senior Center and several local book clubs. She was also an active member of the Wilmington Methodist Church, where she participated in “Ruth’s Circle,” a women’s group in the Church, as well as other church events.

Calling hours were held at Nichols Funeral Home, Inc. on Tuesday, May 28. Funeral services were held on Wednesday, May 29.

Memorial donations in Peggy’s name may be made to the Wilmington High School Scholarship Fund, 159 Church St., Wilmington, MA 01887, the Wilmington United Methodist Church, 87 Church St., Wilmington, MA 01887 or to the Wilmington Community Fund, P.O. Box 147, Wilmington, MA 01887.
